Riwaq art gallery wanted to develop non-traditional art forms and thus wanted to increase the capacity of the existing building to include more public exhibition spaces, café, more office space, kitchen and a lecture room. A careful conditions survey mapped out the existing building in order to evaluate the viability of adding another floor at the roof in order to increase the capacity of the building. Salloum and Salloum responded by connecting the building via a shop front type of arrangement to the street level in order to engage the passer by with the ongoing programme of the gallery. We also designed flexible spaces which meant that the newly refurbished building can adapt and change with the Alriwaq as they moved from traditional forms of art into non-traditional forms and community based art projects.
